Norwich Boot and Shoe Industry

Early Days of Norwich Boot & Shoe Industry

The birth of the modern shoemaking industry in Norwich can be traced back to 1792 when James Smith, a cordwainer (or leather worker) based in a small shop behind Norwich Market, became the first shoemaker in the country to offer an alternative to bespoke footwear. He realised that since many people had feet of the same size it was unnecessary for all boots and shoes to be made to measure and that if he perfected a series of lasts shoes could be made in greater quantities without the need to make and store individual lasts. The company he gave birth to still trades today as Start-rite Shoes.
